Confidence: The Mental Game

Monica Alongi in 2002Deciding to compete in the 2010 Interactive Nutrition SAF Fall Spectacular was a crazy idea. After all, I was a retired fitness competitor and I had not competed since 2002!

The last time I was onstage, I was in fitness competitions where there were three rounds: two physique rounds and a routine round. Training for the routine round was a challenge for me, because I didn’t have a gymnastics background and learning gymnastics in my late 20s was part of my mental and physical challenge. I had never done straddle jumps, or balance and flexibility moves such as the splits. Trying to overcome the physical challenge included overcoming the mental challenge as well. I would worry too much about injuring myself if I tried something new such as jumping up and landing on the ground in a pushup position . . . on hardwood. But I did it and always placed in the top five.

Vanda HadareanI wanted to tell you about my experience at the 2010 SAF Elite Championship. It is one of my favorite fitness-modeling competitions to enter because SAF stands for “Serious About Fitness.” Yes, I am serious about fitness (even though I find it fun too). I believe that any woman who wants to achieve a strong, healthy and sexy physique, as SAF promotes, can do it – if she really, honestly puts her mind to it. With proper meal planning, proper training, and proper supplementation, you, too, can have the physique you want!

Since 2008, I have been working hard with the hope to achieve the perfect body and stage presence that SAF is looking for in a competitor. I finally achieved my goal this year. It wasn’t easy, but I reached it. Read on to follow my journey!

Vince GirondaI had an experience back in 1986 when I was about 22 years old that changed my approach to life forever. Hopefully my story might motivate you.

I was sitting at home on Christmas Eve, reading an article in a bodybuilding magazine about Vince Gironda, someone who was considered not only to be a legend in fitness but the greatest trainer who ever lived. He owned a gym in North Hollywood called Vince’s Gym and almost everyone who was anyone in the bodybuilding world in the ‘60s and ‘70s trained there for a time. Even Arnold Schwarzenegger trained under Vince back when he was an up-and-coming star. And because Vince’s Gym was in the heart of Hollywood, a number of actors and entertainers trained there at one time or another: Clint Eastwood, Erik Estrada, Carl Weathers, James Garner, even Cher, to name just a few. Vince is in the photo on the right – it was taken in the early 1960s when he was about 43 years of age. Vince was about 68 in 1986, and died in 1997 at 79.
