Taking Chances

Every time I write an article like this, I take a chance. Although my intention is to be positive and inspiring, there’s always the risk that someone will read the article and not like what I’m saying or not agree at all with the points I am trying make. There’s even the off chance that my article will annoy some people. So there’s no guarantee that the message will get across in the way it was intended. That’s the chance I take.

On the other hand, it’s also possible that someone will like what I have to say, and it might make them take some sort of action that will lead to something positive in their life. If that happens, then I have succeeded.

My suspicion is that the women who are competing in the Fall 2008 SAF Model Search on November 1 are the kind who take chances too. Granted, some are probably competing just for the thrill of it, but I suspect most of them are doing it because of the chance they have to come out on top and become part of our SAF Elite. And I believe it’s a chance worth taking. For example, one person who took that chance is Lynette Williams, the Fitness Model winner in our Summer 2008 SAF Model Search. Had Lynnette never dared to grasp the opportunity and enter the show in June, she wouldn’t be in the position she’s in now. Lynette’s featured in our "People" section this month.

However, it’s important to remember that winning isn’t everything and it’s not the only reason that you should take chances. Even the women who don’t win at the November 1 show should be admired because they had the guts to actually get up onstage to compete, something not everyone has the courage to do. Therefore, win or lose, everyone who takes a chance and competes in the Fall 2008 show has succeeded in a significant way.

In order to get ahead, you have to set objectives for yourself every so often. It doesn’t mean that you have to compete in our SAF Model Search; rather, it could be something as simple as setting a goal for yourself to lose so many pounds to get into shape. But whatever the case, if you want to get ahead, sooner or later you’re going to have to put yourself out there, just as I do every time I write an article like this one, to allow yourself the opportunity to take one step forward. There’s no guarantee that you’ll succeed when you do it, but you’ll have at least taken the initiative and tried. If you do it often enough, even if you don’t succeed all the time, you’ll likely succeed some of the time and be much further ahead in the end.

In closing, I want to say "good luck" to all the women competing in the Fall 2008 SAF Model Search. As I said, you should be commended for simply entering the country’s number-one women’s physique event regardless of whether you’re the winner or not. At the end of it all, though, six more women will become part of our prestigious SAF Elite – six women who each took a chance and made it! Read this spot next month and I’ll tell you exactly who they are. Chances are, these will be some of the big names in fitness in the future.
