Our newest DVD, Building a Beautiful Body #1, is a beginner's guide to attaining great shape. It's the perfect tool that can help you feel more confident about what you're doing the first time that you go to the gym.

Getting Started Fearlessly!

Going to the gym can be quite stressful for some people. I don’t mean the actual act of getting there – hopping in your car and driving there is easy enough – but, rather, getting over the intimidation that comes with being the new person there. I know, because I’ve been going to the gym for more than 25 years and I see those fearful-looking new faces almost every day. What I want to tell you is that going there doesn’t have to be scary, and you shouldn’t feel intimidated at all. Here are a few reasons why.

First, you have to remember that every person who’s a regular at the gym now was, at one time, the new person there. Therefore, they all had their first day when they, too, felt out of place. So, don’t worry; you’re not the only one who’s going to the gym for the first time.

Second, understand that even if a person goes to the gym regularly, it doesn’t mean they know what they’re doing. In fact, many don’t, and this is something that Natalie Waples specifically talks about in our brand-new SeriousAboutFitness.com video called Building a Beautiful Body #1 that’s available now on DVD. This video is designed to be a beginner’s guide to getting into shape and in it Natalie demonstrates a number of beginner-level exercises used to shape the upper body. As well, throughout the video are interview segments where Natalie talks about her methods for getting in shape. It’s in one of these segments that Natalie discusses how people get intimidated when they first go to the gym, because they see all the other people there who seem to know what they’re doing. The truth is, however, most don’t. In fact, if you watch Building a Beautiful Body #1 or our other video, All About Mindi 1 (it features fitness pro Mindi O’Brien), you can learn a tremendous amount, and you will know more than most of those you see working out.

Finally, realize that although you may be nervous about going to the gym for the very first time, even the veterans in the gym get intimidated from time to time – at least the ones who challenge themselves regularly do. For example, Natalie Waples had worked out for quite some time before I met her, but when she decided to pursue competitive figure she asked me to help, since she knew my reputation for getting competitors into contest-shape quickly. She also knew that I had a reputation as a "hard-ass," mostly because I demand a lot of effort from those I help, and the training methods I prefer aren’t the same as she had been using in the past. As a result, I could tell that she was a little nervous the first time we trained together. However, she got over it quickly when she realized that although this would be quite new to her, it wasn’t something she couldn’t overcome.

So remember, everyone gets nervous and intimidated from time to time, from beginners to veterans – that’s normal. The key is to make sure that you’re not so intimidated that it holds you back. As daunting as the first day in the gym seems, within a few visits you’ll probably start to feel like it’s your second home, and in no time at all you’ll wonder what you were ever so worried about in the first place. At that point you’ll be fearless about going there, and you’ll be well on your way to building a much better body. Get started now.
