Start Getting into Great Shape Now!

For most people, winter isn’t the greatest time to get into shape. In December, obviously, there’s Christmas, and that takes up a lot of time. As for January and February, well, if you live in a cold, snowy climate like I do, you know it’s too cold to think about doing much, other than keeping warm. People train during this time, but there’s little motivation to look your best.

However, in March things change. This is the month that signals the end of winter and hints at the beginning of spring, and that gives many people the kick in the pants they need to really start exercising and getting into shape. Furthermore, summer is around the corner and everyone wants to look best then. As a result, March is a much more motivating month than most.

March also kicks off the beginning of the competitive season with the Arnold Sports Festival that’s held annually in Columbus, Ohio, USA. This year it runs from March 2-4. The event is enormous, showcasing a wide range of sports, including fencing, figure skating, gymnastics, wrestling, boxing, and much more. In fact, it features a greater number of athletes than the Olympics! For physique fans, though, the real draws at the Festival are the Arnold Classic, the Fitness International, and the Figure International competitions that feature competitive bodybuilding, fitness, and figure respectively.

Obviously, for the actual competitors in these in these events, the thrill of competing is exciting. Just ask Canadian fitness star Mindi O’Brien, who’s making her third straight appearance at this year’s Fitness International. We interviewed her for the "People" section this month and you can tell that she’s excited. What’s more, she didn’t even take a winter break like most of us. Instead, with the Fitness International looming, she was training full-throttle all through the winter months to be in shape for this event.

However, while competing is a great thrill and a surefire motivator, just attending this event can be very motivating as well. I know of numerous women who are going down there just to watch the competitions, and, no doubt, after they see many of their favorite stars compete, they will be inspired to get into shape themselves when they get back home. Oftentimes, the day after they arrive home, their own training kicks up a notch with their newfound enthusiasm.

For us, going to the Arnold Sports Festival is pretty exciting too, since we’ll be covering some of the events there. You’ll be able to see coverage of the Fitness International and Figure International competitions in the "Edge" section in April, and you’ll be able to see hundreds of photos that we take there on our sister site, ThePhotoIssue.com, later this month. Unfortunately, we can’t cover everything – the Arnold Sports Festival is just too big – but we’ll do our best to bring as much coverage as we can.

March is certainly a motivating month – it’s the kickoff into spring and summer that can give you the kick start you need to get into shape. But, if you need even more motivation, let me make a suggestion that might help you get into the competitive spirit. As we announced last month, this June we’re holding our first SAF Model Search, featuring two categories to compete in: Figure Model and Fitness Model. The judges will be looking for attractive, positive, healthy, fit-looking females to showcase what SeriousAboutFitness.com is about. This competition is open to any woman who is 18 years of age or older, from anywhere in the world.

The SAF Model Search category winners will receive cash prizes, and the top three will all be featured extensively in our network of SAF-related sites. Furthermore, the top-three winners will gain SAF Elite status, and join the ranks of Natalie Waples, Christy Wolfe, Stacey-Lynn Mlinarevic, Kelly Taphouse and Deanne Ortman. Future Elite-division competitions will feature even more lucrative prize packages.

So, will one of the winners be you? You’ll never know unless you try. This event is just three months away, and there’s no better time to start preparing than the motivating month of March.

Start getting into great shape now!
